Director's Statement
As filmmakers we gravitate towards telling stories about health and medicine, work where we often spend time with film participants experiencing profound loss. When we learned about Camp Widow, we were struck both by the powerful model the camp offered for engaging with grief in a community-centered and therapeutic way, and by widowhood as an unaddressed public health crisis.
There are currently 15 million widowed people in the US, and losing a partner is the most stressful life experience that most of us will endure. Partner loss is an experience that is typically not only traumatic, but also profoundly isolating in a culture uncomfortable with death and processing loss. In telling this story of people grappling with grief honestly, publicly and in community, we wanted to not only bring attention to the experience of partner loss, but to also open up space as a culture and society for dialogue around the losses of loved ones we will all experience.
